"I prefer simple images that are quiet but powerful. The pleasure of photography is that it has the power to transform mundane and familiar scenes into something strange and haunting."

JANNE HERNES (born in Oulu, Finland) is a photographer and artist based in Galway, Ireland. His work is inspired by the tradition of subjective documentary photography, which emphasizes the personal vision of the photographer while respecting documentary approach. His photographs often have a melancholic undertone that invites the viewer to contemplate.

Hernes works with long time projects, often related to a particular geographic location. Sense of place, personal belief systems and human-nature relationship are recurrent themes in his work. He sees photographic medium as an ideal tool to capture and express fragmentary experience which escapes narrative description. Hernes has developed his own visual approach through years of practice working with digital and analogue techniques.

Hernes is a teacher of philosophy and adult educator,  but dedicates his time now to photography. He has previously made a career in education and civil society sectors. He has a master's degree in social sciences, having studied philosophy, art education and contemporary culture.

Hernes is available for assignments and projects. Please feel free to make contact.
