THE LONGEST WALK
I made several journeys to Northern Lapland and Norway between 2012 and 2017 with my spouse. Mainly to the areas of Finnmark and Muotka, situated between 69 and 70 degrees northern latitudes. These northernmost areas are part of Sápmi, rich with culture and history. Nevertheless it was the nature and vast, untamed landscape that enthralled us. An inhospitable, trying terrain - yet full of intensive, enduring, precarious life.
During our hiking trips I took pictures, visual notes or memorandums, so to speak. One theme became predominant: a solitary figure in the midst of an ever expanding landscape. Without human made artefacts, only a living being could demonstrate the vast proportions of the place. I soon noticed how a particular motif emerged: an endless (but not never-ending) walk through the wilderness as an allegory.
